This episode was a mix of scenes from the past and the present. The past showed that Elena was having normal teenage problems in her love life, but without any supernatural tinges. She wasn't honest about her feelings towards Matt, but at least they were able to get past it and become friends in the present. It was that friendship which was one of the best parts of this episode as she talked to him about her indecision concerning Damon and Stefan.
